Valve Conditions
What Is Mitral Valve Insufficiency?

Mitral regurgitation is a condition in which the mitral valve does not close completely, allowing blood to flow backward from the left ventricle into the left atrium.
Depending on its severity and cause, mitral regurgitation may lead to:
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Reduced exercise capacity
- Atrial fibrillation
- Enlargement of the heart chambers
- Heart failure
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the disease and may include medical therapy, surgical repair or replacement, or transcatheter treatment such as TEER in appropriately selected patients.
